The Little Library up the Road

Hiya bookish people!

Today, I am back with something a little different, and quite frankly, genius. I saw this amazing little house-on-a-stick on my way home one day, and I didn’t really have time to look at it or for it when I went past. I tried to do a little research on it, but then when we went past again, I finally got the name written on the side and so I was able to do some actual research. This mini beauty is called the ‘Little Free Library’ and they have an official website where you find out more about how it works (officially) and how to get one for your neighbourhood. Click here!

The sort of books that I found here were quite a range, anywhere from the tales of Winnie the Pooh (for children) and all the way to the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy. There was around maybe 48 - 50 books in here. These are mainly based around children's books, but it has certainly gotten use! While I stopped to take photos of this amazing project, a woman walking her dog stopped to talk to me about it. Apparently it went in at the beginning of last week and has already been used by quite a few people! I can’t wait to add more books to this beautiful box!

So, pretty much how it works is that you take a book, and you leave a book. That’s it. It requires a lot of trust, but it is such a beautiful idea, which I think I have said way too much this post - but it’s true! Thankfully, I live in a neighbourhood where there are heaps of kids, and I plan on adding my own books to this box over time. Hey, even when there are good cheap books at the store or at the thrift shops, I may buy it just for people to enjoy. Can I just say again that I think this is a beautiful idea?

The last thing that I want to add, is that I am thinking of going back to my blogging roots. Have I ever told you guys the story of how Bruno and I came up with the idea for this blog? Well, that may just be a post for another day. I want to add post-it-notes to each of the books that I put in this box. I can’t fathom writing in books, but it may be easier now that I think of it. But these post-it-notes will have a small review or even just saying what the book means to me. I don’t really want to link back to here, since it would be sort of like taking advantage of it? Does that make sense? Anyway, please check out ‘Little Free Library’’s instagram, they have some amazing boxes! I’ve linked to a few of my favourites below!

Do you have anything like this in your neighbourhood?

  1. Awww love this!! I've seen different versions in the past but it never gets old. Passing on books we love with little notes inside sounds most excellent. And I love that its all about trust and loving on books. Generosity is never a bad thing. ❤️

  3. This is such an amazing idea! I never come across things like this where I live but I would love to participate in it! It's just super cool!
And I love the post it idea. Some books are just a part of you or are meaningful to you so the people that get them should know that.
    Great post!!

    1. That's good to know - my post-it-note idea is looking like it is getting positive messages so I am hoping to do it soon. There is a cute small second hand shop near me and so I would like to buy a few YA books to add :)

  4. This is so cute!
I used to live in a country where public libraries were pretty much non-existent and only wealthier people could afford to buy books. Malls were a big thing there and where most people ended up socializing. They started a free library like this in one of the biggest malls there, and it was so well-received! You could walk by there at anytime of the day and see all kinds of people reading near it.
I love your idea of leaving post-its in the books! It’s a sweet way to add to the already magical experience ♥️.

  5. I think this is such a cool idea and a really fun, creative way to get people reading and/or talking about books. It is so fun to be able to share books with everyone and I think the idea of exchanging promotes giving in a neighbourhood which is wonderful and it is books so it is so cool!!
I love the idea of putting post-it notes in the books so you can leave a little message or review-- so cool!!

  7. I've seen pictures of little libraries on the internet, but there's nothing like this in my country, which makes me sad. Like you said, this is a beautiful, wholesome idea, and I'm happy you'll get to use this, and add to it. :)

  9. This is such an awesome idea (: I don't think I've ever seen any of them near me. Oddly the other day when I mentioned how are it is to see a phone box now I was told that they do the same thing in a lot of those though. I've never noticed but apparently people quite often leave books in them to swap over.

  10. I wish I had a Little Free Library near me! I guess there is one near my work but I haven't stopped by to check it out yet. This reminds me to remedy that.

And I totally think you should put a review post it in there with a link to direct people here. You're putting the books in there aren't you? It's only fair! Besides, maybe it's a good way to get to know your neighbors.
