Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library, hidden far below the surface of the earth.

What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction.

Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the mysterious book and in his own life.

Hiya bookish people!

The absolute beauty that is Erin Morganstern’s writing has come back in the form of The Starless Sea after her amazing novel The Night Circus which I had loved so much. There are messages and symbolism littered throughout this hypnotic novel of imagination and woven into the world of multiple fairy tales. The multiple fairytales are extremely intriguing but so much was poured into this novel, emotionally, and atmospherically. I did not know where I ended, and this book ended.

This book has decided to build an entire estate near my heart, and I just can not let it go! It is complete with stables, a greenhouse, a west and east wing, and a lot of different areas, too! There is a lot of symbolism, which I am glad to notice since I am as observant as a brick wall Harry Potter when it comes to these sorts of things in reading for fun. Analysing a text for school is very different, and I am just glad that the symbolism in this novel was portrayed very uniquely by the symbols of bees, hearts, swords, keys, and lots of others. I love the fact that there is also a huge philosophical exploration into reality; what it is and what it could and can be. And considering that I am quite against romanticism, I really enjoyed this aspect of the writing. Well, I actually enjoyed every aspect of this novel. Erin Morganstern is a queen!

Now, this novel is extremely slow-paced, but not too be descriptive and blood curdling, but rather to be savoured and enjoyed over a long period of time. A bit like a dark tv series that you cannot binge because there is so much going on! This may mean that it is not for everyone, as it is very slow and therefore complicated. Which, considering it is written in 3rd person I am surprised I got so invested!

Do I recommend this book? Yes! If you are able to wade through books with a similar pace as Game of Thrones, or Lorde of the Rings, then this is a book for you! However, the plot and mood and ideas of this novel are completely unique to Erin Morganstern.
